J. Harrell Reid, Sheriff
Sheriff J. Harrell Reid was born in Valdosta, GA on March 31, 1947. He is a life-long resident of Hamilton County, representing the 5th generation of his family to call the county home. Sheriff Reid has two children, Katy & J. Reid. He attends the First Baptist Church of Jasper.
Sheriff Reid attended Hamilton County public schools and graduated from Jasper High School. He earned his Associate of Science degree from Miami-Dade Jr. College and his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Florida in 1969. Sheriff Reid is also a graduate of the Florida Law Enforcement Academy at North Florida Junior College.
Sheriff Reid began his career in Law Enforcement with the Hamilton County Sheriff's office in 1968. He was first elected Hamilton County Sheriff in 1988. He has remained in office continually, running unapposed in 1992 and 2004.
Honors and Affiliations
Sheriff Reid was accepted by the FBI National Academy in 1990, and graduated from the Academy in 1991. He served the Florida Sheriffs Assocation as the Sargeant-at-Arms from 1992-1999, and elected to the Florida Sheriffs Assocation Board of Directors. Sheriff Reid was also appointed to the Medical Examiners Commission by Gov. Lawton Chiles in 1997, and reappointed by Gov. Jeb Bush in 2001.
